Bagre Dam spillage

The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has issued a public safety alert ahead of the planned spillage of the Bagre Dam in Burkina Faso, which began on Monday, August 25, 2025.

According to NADMO’s Upper East Regional Office, its Burkinabe counterpart, Sonabel, confirmed that the dam’s water level had reached a filling capacity of 90.24%, equivalent to 234.27 metres as of August 23, 2025.

The situation has necessitated the controlled release of excess water to prevent overflow.

Initially, the spillage was slated for Wednesday, August 27, but the rising water levels forced an earlier start.

NADMO has cautioned all communities situated along the White Volta River to take precautionary measures and relocate to safer areas to minimise potential risks.

“We urge all affected communities to adhere strictly to this advisory.

NADMO, in collaboration with development partners, is working to mitigate the impact of the spillage on lives and properties,” the Upper East Regional Directorate stated.

Residents seeking further information or assistance are advised to reach out to the NADMO regional leadership:

Madam Akolgo Rebecca Assibi – Regional Director

Mr. Issah Tanko Yakubu – Deputy Regional Director, Operations

Mr. Christopher Beokena Bugroog – Deputy Regional Director, Administration

The annual spillage of the Bagre Dam often results in flooding in downstream Ghanaian communities, particularly in the Upper East Region, leading to the destruction of farms, homes, and infrastructure.

NADMO has assured the public of continuous monitoring and timely updates as the situation unfolds.
