The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has reported a staggering 1,237 road accident fatalities in Ghana between January and June 2024.

The NRSA attributed the majority of these tragic deaths to wrongful overtaking and drivers' failure to adhere to traffic signs.

Pearl Adusu Sateckla, the Head of Public Relations at the NRSA, expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasising the critical need for stricter traffic regulation adherence to prevent such incidents.

“The contributory factor might be as a result of head-on collisions, and head-on collisions are a result of wrongful overtaking and overspeeding. Research has shown that about 90% of our drivers plying our roads in the country do not adhere to the speed limits," she stated.

Ms. Sateckla highlighted the increased severity of crashes when speed limits are ignored, noting, "When the speed is high, the severity of the crash is so much."

She stressed that stricter traffic law enforcement and increased public awareness are crucial to reversing this deadly trend.
