GenCED holds post-election forum on women’s participation in Ghana’s 2024 elections
The Gender Center for Empowering Development (GenCED) has organized a post-election forum to assess women’s participation and representation in Ghana’s 2024 elections.
Speaking at the forum, Mrs. Gifty Ofori, Programme and Monitoring & Evaluation Officer for GenCED, shared key findings from their gender-sensitive election observation, which deployed 230 observers nationwide.
Mrs. Ofori highlighted several persistent challenges affecting women’s involvement in the electoral process, including:
Violence during voter registration, campaigns, and primaries Inadequate accessibility for marginalized groups Limited media coverage for female candidates Financial constraints hindering women’s political participationShe also addressed the gap in President John Mahama's commitment to achieving 30% representation of women in governance.
"Currently, ministerial appointments stand at 16.7%, which is far below the promised target.
While progress has been made in other areas, we urge the President to fulfil his pledge in subsequent appointments," she stated.
The forum advocated for the implementation of affirmative action policies to bridge the gender gap in governance.
Participants urged the public to hold the government accountable for its promises to promote inclusivity and gender equity in leadership.
GenCED reaffirmed its commitment to empowering women in politics and called for collaborative efforts to ensure a more inclusive democratic process in Ghana.
