President John Dramani Mahama has suspended Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo following the establishment of a prima facie case against her, based on three separate petitions.

The President’s action, taken in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, comes as part of a formal process to investigate the allegations.

To carry out the probe, a five-member committee has been constituted with the mandate to thoroughly examine the petitions.

The committee is chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang.

Other members include Supreme Court Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo, Major Flora Bazwaannura Dalugo of the Ghana Armed Forces, and Prof James Sefah Dzisah, an associate professor at the University of Ghana.

In line with Article 146(10) of the Constitution and acting on the advice of the Council of State, President Mahama has issued a warrant suspending the Chief Justice with immediate effect.

The suspension is to remain in force pending the conclusion of the committee’s proceedings.

The announcement was formally communicated by the President’s spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who also serves as Minister for Government Communications.
