2026 WAFCON: CAF expands participation to 16 nations, adding 4 including Egypt
The 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has been expanded to 16 teams by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
The move adds four more nations to the tournament, after the end of the qualification process, and despite their failure to qualify. They are; Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mali, and Egypt.
The four were chosen per their ranking, being among the highest-placed teams that lost in the final qualifying round.
The decision was approved by CAF’s Executive Committee, which explained the move formed part of a "strategic vision to strengthen the competitiveness and development of women’s football on the continent".
The nations that qualified for the games were: Zambia, Tanzania, Malawi, Algeria, Nigeria, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Kenya, Cape Verde, South Africa, Senegal, and Morocco (hosts).
The continental showpiece will take place from March 17, to April 3, 2026.
The last WAFCON, the July 2024 edition, was won by Nigeria's Super Falcons, while Ghana's Black Queens finished in third place.
