Police to deploy Robocop units to boost security at football matches
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) has announced plans to deploy specialised Robocop units to address hooliganism and improve security at football matches across the country.
The announcement was made by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno during a meeting with Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku and his delegation at the Police Headquarters in Accra.
According to IGP Yohunu, the deployment of the specialised units, together with enhanced security technology, is expected to improve crowd control, discourage violent behaviour and create a safer environment for players, match officials and supporters.
He explained that football matches require strategic policing because of large crowds and heightened emotions, stressing that the police service remains committed to maintaining order while allowing fans to enjoy games peacefully.
The IGP also pledged closer cooperation with the GFA to ensure competitions nationwide are conducted under safe and professionally managed conditions.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts by both the Police Service and the football governing body to curb disorderly conduct and strengthen confidence in stadium safety.
