UDS opens 2025 World Universities Football World Cup with 2-1 victory over Sharjah University

The University for Development Studies (UDS) football team has opened its 2025 FISU World University Football Tournament campaign in style with a thrilling 2–1 victory over the University of Sharjah (UAE) in Dalian, China.

From the first whistle, the clash was intense, fluid and world-class, a true statement that football knows no boundaries. After a goalless first half and some nervy moments, UDS came back stronger.

In the 68th minute, top scorer Ezideen Alhassan smashed home a free kick to break the deadlock.

In the 80th minute, Fawzan Dandawa weaved past two defenders and curled the ball into the far corner to double the lead.

Sharjah pulled one back late in the game, but the Ghanaian boys held on until the final whistle, sealing a famous victory for UDS, Ghana and Africa.

Head Coach Ibrahim Tanko praised the team’s fighting spirit: “This was a fantastic start. The boys showed character, discipline and heart which are the true spirit of UDS!”

Team Captain Mohammed Asigri added: “We respect every opponent but fear no one. Spain is next  and we’re ready!” 

UDS, Ghana and African Champions l, will next play Ramon Lllull University from Spain before closing the group stages with a game against defending Champions, Paulista University from Brazil.
