The Coalition of Trade Unions (CTU) has announced plans to stage a peaceful demonstration over the continued suspension of the Kumasi Central Market Phase Two Project.

In a press release, the Coalition said it was disappointed that work on the project remains stalled despite repeated assurances from the government, particularly the Minister for Local Government, Rural Development, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, that construction would resume.

According to the CTU, traders had expected work to restart when the current administration took office, but the project has remained abandoned, extending delays that began under the previous government.

The Coalition said the prolonged suspension has displaced thousands of traders, many of whom are operating under difficult conditions at the Racecourse, Adum and other parts of Kumasi, resulting in congestion and economic hardship.

The CTU is demanding the immediate resumption of construction, the use of premium monies collected from traders for the first phase to complete the second phase, and urgent measures to ease congestion in Adum and surrounding business areas.

It also called for the consideration of private management of the completed Phase One market, arguing that this would improve its operations and maintenance.

The Coalition warned that if the government fails to act, affected traders may occupy available trading spaces and move into the uncompleted market regardless of allocation arrangements.

It said the date and other details of the planned demonstration will be announced in due course, and urged the government to fulfil its commitment to complete the project.
