Christians begin lenten fasting in preparation for Easter

Lent fasting

Christians across Ghana and around the world have begun a period of fasting and prayer as part of spiritual preparations toward the celebration of Easter.

The fasting season, known as Lent, marks a significant period on the Christian calendar.

It commemorates the 40 days Jesus Christ spent fasting and praying in the wilderness, according to biblical tradition.

Lent, which spans 40 days excluding Sundays, is observed by many Christian denominations, including the Roman Catholic Church, the Methodist Church of Ghana and the Anglican Church.

The season is characterised by fasting, repentance, almsgiving and intensified prayer.

During this period, many Christians abstain from certain foods and personal comforts as a form of spiritual discipline and reflection.

Church leaders have urged the faithful to use the season to deepen their relationship with God, promote peace and extend support to the vulnerable in society.

The Lenten season will culminate in the observance of Holy Week, leading to Good Friday and ultimately Easter Sunday, which celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

As the season begins, Christians have been encouraged to embrace humility, self-examination and acts of charity in anticipation of the Easter festivities.
