The District Chief Executive (DCE) of Twifo Attimokwa in the Central Region, Mr. Isaac K. Yawson, has appealed to the central government to intensify efforts to combat illegal mining activities in the area.

Speaking to the media following the tragic death of three illegal miners at Twifo Mampong on Wednesday, the DCE expressed concern over the continued destruction of water bodies by galamsey operators using “chanfams” (floating dredging machines). He stressed that while reclamation exercises are ongoing, stricter enforcement is urgently needed to halt the menace.

Mr. Yawson further urged the government to consider banning the importation of such machines into the country, as their widespread use is fueling the destruction of rivers and farmlands.

He also appealed for the deployment of the Marine Police to strengthen security and assist in clamping down on illegal operators along the waterways.

“The fight against galamsey cannot be won without decisive action.

We must stop the inflow of these machines and provide more security support to protect our environment,” he emphasised.
