Azumah Nelson Complex: Contractor set to resume work in Feb as gov't pushes for 2026 finish
The government has pledged to complete the long-delayed Azumah Nelson Sports Complex by the end of 2026, according to the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Osman Abdulai Ayariga.
Work on the facility began in 2018 but has stalled several times, slowing progress on the project.
After inspecting the site, Mr Ayariga told Citi News that construction is advancing steadily, with major sections such as the administration block close to completion.
He revealed the contractor is expected to return to site shortly, following fresh funding support from the Ministry of Finance.
“Hopefully, we are looking at the contractor resuming work as soon as possible, even before the end of this month. We hope to complete the entire sports complex before end of year, thanks to the capital injection by the ministry of finance and His Excellency John Mahama,” he said.
Osman emphasised the president's seriousness about the project.
“He is very passionate about completing the Azumah Nelson Sports Complex, not only that but also the Youth Resource Centres across the country. Currently we have eight which are at various stages of completion. The promise was to complete at least two this year. We are looking at completing the Azuma Nelson Complex and any other centre, minimum,” he added.
Mr Ayariga also indicated that the overall cost of the project would be made public once construction is fully completed.
